Title: Spitting up=sickness or Reflux
Posted: 2 yearss ago

My 7 week old started spitting 5 days ago.  He spits up after every feeding, sometimes it's all of the milk, others it's a little every 20 minutes. he kept crying all night and all day.  I thought it was reflux, the np said it was surprising to develop that now.  She thought he had a bug, but prescribed Zantac.  Has anyone else delt with this similar sitruation and what happened, how long did it last, etc.  Of course I am off dairy now (and I love Milk)!

For some reason when I went back to work and he began bottle feeding, he started spitting up.  He about 12 weeks, we had to mix a little bit  (couple of tablespoons) of rice cereal in with his breast milk (pumping at the time, so he was bottle fed).  It thickened the milk up and stopped the spitting up.

simon had reflux when he was born, we had one of the nurses bring him into my room one day and she said he trew up 6 times completly soaking the sheets so they had to be changed everytime, they thought it was lactose intolerance so put him on lactose free formula. he ended up screaming and spewing constantly for almost the first 3 months then finally the doctor said it sounds like reflux so put him on zantac, the change was dramatic it was like having a different baby. have you started him on the zantac? are you seeing any improvement? the worst thing with the zantac is the flavor its a very strong mint and i havent heard of a baby liking it yet and they cant reflavor it, for simon we had to put it in his bottle or he wouldnt take it. we took simon off it once he started eating more solid foods so somewhere around 6 or 7 months i think.

Well I'm dealing with some spitting up as well...... however with another thread I posted I did mention that it she was losing milk while eating. On the other hand.....I do notice that if i put my little one that is only 4 wks on her down on her back after she eats......she will let it all go! If I place her on her side or prop her up she has much better luck keeping everything down. Maybe that will help you?

He's been on Zantac for 2 days now, and yes the smell and taste is horrible.  He doesn't like it.  Yesterday, I thought it helped, but last night he puked up everything twice, and then this morning the same thing.  About a 1/2 hour after he spits everything up, he's hungry again-AND THE CYCLE REPEATS!  It's very frustrating. But he is producing wet diapers and stools so I guess he's getting the nutrients needed.

My question is-can the acid in the stomach hurt his esophagus from the repititive pukes?

yes it can, when he does it does it smell like vomit or just milk? i talked to a lady when simon was getting his neck xrays her daughter had reflux so bad that it cause ulcers in her throat so they had to put in a feeding tube since she stopped eating at the time i talked to her she was 2 and was still getting half her food through the tube. if the zantac isnt working there are other ones the doctor can try, i read about some ppl getting a rx for pepcid because the zantac wasnt working and it also comes in a strawberry flavor some ppl have had luck with over the counter liquid antacids like mylanta. simon still gets refluxy sometimes but it just causes bad hiccups sometimes ill give him a piece of a tums to suck on and that helps.

You may want to change his milk.

My youngest (now 4) had Reflux as an infant.  We were also given the Zantac, but she screamed everytime we gave it to her and it just made things worse.  We always propped her up after every meal, and she NEVER slept in her bassinet.  We actually returned it because she wasn't able to use it.  She slept in her car seat or while I was holding her.  It was a long 8 months. LOL!  We did notice that as long as we did not lay her down after she was fed, she would rarely spit up.  She did eventually grow out of it.  YEAH!  :0)

My baby spit up what seemed like a lot when she was that age, and her doctor told me to hold her in a sitting up position for 15 minutes after each feeding. This seemed to help.

Well, here is an update.  My 8 week old had his 2month wellness exam last Friday and it was shown that he had lost 6oz since Monday.  My doctor recommended an Ultra Sound immediately-we found out he had Pyloric stenosis-the muscle from the stomach to the intestines is too tight (cx the vommiting).  He was admitted and had surgery to loosen the muscle.  Everything went well, and he's doing great.

Apparently this is really common-3 in 1,000 babies get it (usually first born males).

It's been an emotional couple of days, but he's eating great and has a little spit up (which is common after surgery), but not much.  He's been smiling like crazy all day today!

Thank you for all of your advice.  This is a new one for me-the mommy stress!

Wow, I guess that just shows that sometimes even "common" baby ailments can be something serious.  I commend you for sticking with it and making sure that he was taken care of!!
