Yeah, when Lorraine came to me with the idea, I knew it was definitely something that parents would enjoy. I brought on Shelice, because of her devotion to parenting and after having 6 kids, she has an amazing amount of experience! Shelice, you are truly inspirational. I thought Lorraine's 3 was alot.

Lorraine's three is a lot. I really believe that 2 kids, 3 kids, 6 kids - you still sacrifice. You still become sleep deprived. You still eat your dinner cold after making sure everyone has been taken care of. Smile There is always a little body there that needs something only you can give. Smile

Shelice, what do you think is the most important thing we teach our kids? If you could only insure that they took to heart one thing, what would that be?

Shelice, I loved the article! Can't wait to read more in the future! How did you go about gaining the honor of Mother of the Year?

I think that I hope that each of my children understand that they are a unique person with unique gifts and talents. That they are here to do something only they can do. This goes beyond self-esteem to a sense of self-WORTH. I believe this will help them to rise above peer pressure and the filth of the world. I want my children to know that I see those gifts and talents. I want them to know that when they forget who they are that I will remember and that I will help them remember.

I was nomitnated as young mother of the year by last year's mother of the year. My first reaction was "My house is WAY too messy to be the young mother of the year." I have my weaknesses and things that I work on as a mother. I think that the reason I was chosen was not necessarily how good I am, but what is in my heart. I have an unwavering conviction that motherhood is the greatest thing I will ever do. Of all the things I have ever been or ever will be the greatest will always be mother.

Where did the conviction come from? What made you feel that way?

If I could achieve one thing, it would be this, especially the part I bolded. In those dark places and times, and they will come to all of our kids, just as they have come to us, I would hope that my daughter can draw off me in the same way I did my parents. I like that MommyTalk allows different perspectives on how to deal with all aspects of parenting so that hopefully, after getting through the physical challenges of cooking, cleaning, being a taxi/doctor/banker/etc, we are better prepared to assist in the psychological/mental challenges in a positive way which leads to that sense of self-worth for out kids (and for us!)

It's not often you meet people with true conviction in their heart for such a great cause. I'm sure you are an inspiration for all around you.

I agree with this. I also think that many of the people out there doing bad things were raised by aa mother who didn't have conviction - dedication to seeing their child have the opportunities that they might have missed. I mean, we want our kids to live in a peaceful world guided by prudence and wisdom, so it only makes sense that we raise them to be peaceful and wise. If not us, who? Teachers? Coaches? Principals? Maybe. Hopefully. But the only people we can really count on, really be sure about, are usually within the family, extended family or tight-knit community.

That conviction has been a long time coming. Mostly from prayer. I have been through depression and other things trying, including almost losing my fifth child and other trials that has made me reflect on what it is I'm really doing and why. I pray that God will give me what I have heard of as a "mother's heart." I have come to understand that there is nothing greater a woman can do. Funny thing is, I think my husband understood that before I did. Smile
