I know there is lots of contraversy out there about this, you are right, but to be honest, my pediatrician said that at this age their mouths are so plyable that having a binky is not going to ruin their mouths so I guess I'm still okay w/it. I would like to get rid of it soon. Any suggestions or tips that have worked for anyone? *Niki

You could wrap a shoe box with wrapping paper and put qwirky (and cheap) little prizes in it. After her nap or in the morning, she can pick out one item....if she takes her nap or sleeps through the night without the pacifier. (go around and collect all the prizes and restock the gift box, that way you don't need to buy more.)

I cut the nipple off the binky and threw away the rest of them so i wasn't tempted to give him the ones that weren't cut. He sucked on it a couple of times then looked at me and said that is was broken. We did that a couple of nights then finally he just threw it away. It was difficult for the first few days because that is how he pacified himself to sleep but he got over it pretty good. Better than i did. I think it is harder to break the parent of the binky than it is the child.

I've also heard of putting garlic salt on the binkies. Has anyone ever tried that approach? I guess it's suppose to be really "icky" for the child when they go stick it in there mouth and they just won't want it anymore. But the trick is, they can't see you putting it on.

I have 3 other kids that never use one for this long. Once he turns 2, then I will think about taking it away. I'm not too worried about it though. I see how fast my kids have grown and I know that he isn't going to have it forever. So I'm not going to stress over it.

It's worked fine. My daughter does suck her two fingers, but she was doing that with the nookie, too. She does it less frequently now that she's 2-1/2.

Sucking on a binky and or thumb provides your baby with the comfort that they need to feel secure in this strange world full of new people and new places and new schedules (bed time). I am not saying that I agree with the long term use of a binky. With my first born the binky was gone by the time his first tooth came in, he just didn't have a need for it anymore. With my middle son he did not take to either. Now I have a thumb sucker and the binky is just for sport (chewing on and tossing). I am beginning to wonder if I am going to have a problem with my 9 month old sucking his thumb for an extended period of time.
